Do not get this book. Surprised by any positive reviews. As mine will apparently go against the grain here, you may feel my opinion should be dismissed. It is a useless book. I have been painting many years, classically trained abroad, etc. I know my stuff, enjoy thoughts, views of all, but this is an assemblage of just nothingness. This has nothing but abstract, useless quotes, witticisms, and unfocused claptrap. None of which is at all useful or thought provoking. Drawing is not important? All objects should be seen as silhouettes?
All objects should be grouped into either light or dark masses? Great painters rarely make good teachers. I was not expecting an instructional, but the lofty, silly quips are pointless. Get John Carlson's book, and above all, those 2 by Harold Speed.
Speed's books are everything one could want or need. I happened upon them 20yrs ago and are held together by rubber bands now. You need motivation? Get Robert Henri. Mark my words. Most of the book is about Hawthorne's comments and critiques of his student's work. This would have been an amazing book if it had the studies.

There are some pearls spread out regardless of this important fact, for example: "The vision of the artist is the vision to see and the ability to tell the world something that it unconsciously thinks about nature. Everyone knows what a man looks like, or a tree or a house but it is our job to tell the world something about these things that it has not known before, some impression that we alone have received. As part of my self-instruction, I collect art books, both the instructive kind and the art history kind.
Hawthorne is consider one of the master instructors from the last century. He was the founder of the Cape Cod school, which was later continued by Henry Hensche who married a girl from this town and spent his final years here. I never knew about Hensche until after his death and thereby never had the opportunity to take a course with him. So, I had an interest in Hawthorne beyond his teachings.
There's a little book by Hensche that's also available. The book is comprised of his instructions as remembered by his students.

Much of his philosophy in the book comes through the form of critiques of student work. That's where the book becomes a little murky. Of course, his basic tenets are repeated in the critiques, but without the actual painting to look at, his criticism lacks a little foundation. It must also be understood that Hawthorne's beliefs about painting are centered in painting in a realistic representational manner.
But it is beyond a beginner's ability to Not for beginners.
Dover Art Instruction: Hensche on Painting by John W. Robichaux (2005, Paperback)
It may be required reading and content for established artists and serious art students, but beware that there are over a dozen captions that go to missing images there are no images in the book -- describing themes and concepts Mr. Hawthorne discusses beautifully. But it is beyond a beginner's ability to visualize and way too frustrating to see the captions but no images. Dover could do a much better job on this. Highly recommend, think about the fundamentals of painting from the aspect of color and to develop yourself by painting, and then painting more Very happy I took the time for this little book, will refer to it often.
Easy read but much to think about. There are very few books to help painters even fewer for sculptors that are of any real use. This is the only book, of which I am aware, that sucessfully deals with the challenges of outdoor painting in an honest i. Hawthorne encourages his students to de-emphasize drawing and focus on learning to see and mix colors of the proper hue, intensity and value.

He insists that it takes very little drawing information to convey a figure or landscape even the time of day and weather if the relationships among the large regions of various colors are correct. Yes, Hawthorne does repeat himself regarding "the mechanics of putting one spot of color next to another - the fundamental thing".
Obviously he considers this paramount, but there is so much more in this small, inexpensive book. Here are a few examples: "The only way to learn to paint is by painting.
